South Park: The Game
The duo who created South Park (Matt Stone and Trey Parker) are working on a new video game based in the world they have created. This isn’t a shock to anyone who is a fan of the show. They’ve parodied Guitar Hero, the launch of the Wii, and most famously Warcraft in their ‘Make Love, Not Warcraft’ episode. The problem stems from the fact there has been a lot of shitty South Park games out there. I remember excitedly running out and grabbing ‘Chef’s Luv Shack’ for the Dreamcast when it came out in 1999….
I then hated myself the rest of the day after only 10 minutes of play. I was out 50 bucks which was a lot to a broke ass high school kid. Then I fell for it again when Acclaim released ‘South Park’ on the Nintendo 64 as a FPS game.
Once again I was out 50 bucks. Sure it was neat to see the town in full 3d with voice acting but after 5 minutes you were left with a sub-par FPS with floaty controls and the worst FOG on the 64 ever. Seriously, Turok was better….
I stayed away from any further South Park games from there on out. There has been other SP games to hit and I know the last game to come out ‘South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Play!’ game received “ok” reviews but I’ve never been a fan of the genre.
My “AVOID ALL SOUTH PARK GAMES” stance is now being called in to question due to the fact that Matt and Trey are an active part of the creation.
From the new issue of Game Informer:
Thanks to a collaboration with THQ and Obsidian, Parker and Stone are writing the script, performing the dialogue, and overseeing the development of South Park: The Game. Unlike the cash-in Acclaim titles from over a decade ago, this ambitious project is a full-scale RPG for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. As the new kid in South Park, it’ll be up to you to make friends and defend the town from a wide range of threats.
I’m not going to lie here, I’m definitely interested in what this game could end up being. A full scale RPG? It could definitely work and with the power behind the current consoles, this could be quite the special game.
